Works in Progress

Outside of school projects I also curate art in my spare time, although mostly brief studies in my personal sketch book, some are more experimental, I often post them online on instagram. Here are some of the current ones I'm working on and the process so far.

Strawberry Character

In this project I want to practice character design and figure drawing. So referencing one of my childhood toys [an LPS], I'm trying to draw the energy of the Lps as a human. As the subject is outside of my comfort zone, I'm using materials I'm more familiar with: Ink pen, water color and gauche paint.

I've started off so far drawing the Lps in the top corner, and from there sketched out clothing that as a character I think it would wear. After that I found a reference of someone wearing ruffly the outfit I wanted and put it all together. I later went over it in gauche paint with the contrasting color to the main one I plan on using, hot pink.

The last thing that I'm struggling with, before I put it all together is the face and the hair. So I did a couple sketches from references off Pinterest (seen below), but I plan to do more still before I finish it and put it all together on a new page of my sketch book.

Golden Retrievers

When I was younger I mainly used to draw dogs, especially in elementary school and I recently released that I didn't even remember when I had last drawn one to compare how far my art has come since then. I also wanted specifically to try and capture the mood that golden retrievers ways seem to have well simultaneously wanting to play with how the colors around the subject make the subject look.

So far I have a couple base sketches of the subjects I want done in Ink pen (seen below), but I haven't yet gone back with gauche paint like Im planing to, to color them fully. Although currently they also look complete as just Ink pen sketches

The one shown above I'm going to layer with a couple different mediums and see how they interact with the gauche later on.

Altered Hoodie

This project is a lot different than my normal ones, as I don't do work with clothing normally so it feels a bit daunting to work on. I thrifted the hoodie for 6 dollars though, so it won't be a big loss if something goes wrong, and I have connections that may be willing to help if need be.

So far I've cropped it, by cutting off the bottom, as well as making the chest more snug, taking material out of the sides and attaching them back together decoratively with safety pins.

I've also cut decorative holes in the top, but I made them bigger than I intended, and I may try to find a way to partially re cover them.

I still need to go back and sew over where I've cut pieces off so the material doesn't unravel. I was also debating doing a design across the back, or adding on to the hood.

Fantasy Landscape

For this one a wanted a mystical feeling to the landscape and to have the light shining through the trees, and a particaly transparent stream going through. In order to try and achevie that later on I've been slowly layering different mediums, well studying how all of them interact in the order applyed.

The most domanant medium is ink pen, as thats how the peice started, as a sketch as well as the most recent layer of it is ink pen, to add more texture and feeling back in.

Origianally i was going to leave white spaces for the ight to come though, but now im planing on going over it with gauche paint to add some of the light back in, and soffen where parts of the pen marks appear darker in color than i had planed.

Ill probably also go back over the background later on and clean up the yellow and the sky.

Upcoming class Projects

Typically class projects although often more elaborate get finished first as a higher priority, than the personal ones. These are the next few coming up in my classes, and the processes so far, and upcoming in order to complete them.

2D glass mosaic

We're currently designing 5, 4in by 4in sketches with up to 3 layers on them (any more than 3 and the glass would blowout and melt weird).

Soon we are then going to cut out colored glass pieces, with varying surface texture options, to match one of those designs, put it together and fire it in a clam shell kiln. And then we'll have a glass tile with our design. (image shown not exact project result, instead and example of a mosaic)

3D Wood Bass-Relif

We're learning how to use the tools in the wood shop so then we can make our base frame, and then trace out our chosen classic painting on to the wood.

After that we'll cut the pieces and make sure they go into place, and begin shaping them until they have the 3d effect we're going for.

Lastly we'll glue them in place, and paint them, keeping the 3D effect in mind using perspective and foreshortening, until we have an interesting 3D depiction of the 2D classical painting.
